A Verse for Every Scenario

You have one for if the results are bad. You have a different one for if they are inconclusive, which you consider a distinct situation requiring different handling, and you are right about that.

You have one for the conversation you might have to have in November. You have one for if he does not ring. You have one for the version where everything is fine and you feel nothing, because you have been through that before and it frightened you.

It is a system, and it is a good one, and you are the sort of person who builds them.

You are not disorganized anywhere in your life. Everything is covered, there is a plan for each thing, and people come to you when something needs sorting out because you will have thought about it already.

And at some point you did to Scripture what you do to everything else. You indexed it.

Now here is what you noticed last week, and it is why you are reading this.

None of them has ever been used.

Not once. Things have happened, hard things, several of them, and in each case what you actually did was manage it, competently and at speed, and the verse for that scenario sat in the notebook where you had put it.

The system is not a comfort. It is an inventory, and an inventory is a list of things you own, and you have not stood on one of them yet.

What this page will not do

I am not going to tell you preparation is wrong. It is not, and half the people in your life are better off because you are the way you are. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 119:114, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

I am not going to give you a better system. That would be the same instinct in a new notebook.

And I am not going to hand you a list. This category refuses that, and a list is precisely what you already have.

You get one, and it is not indexed against a scenario, which is why it will do something the others have not.

You are not failing at faith by being organized. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and nearness is not withheld from competent people, and the Holy Spirit is in the kitchen with a woman who has a plan for everything and has never once been held.

Here it is

Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.Psalm 119:114

That is yours. It is not filed under anything.

Look at what kind of sentence it is, because it is a different species from the ones in your notebook.

Your verses are if-then. If this happens, hold this. Every one of them is conditional on an event, which means every one of them is waiting for a trigger, and the trigger is the thing you are afraid of. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 119:114, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

This one has no condition in it at all. Thou art my hiding place. Present tense, stated about God, with nothing that has to happen first.

And the two images are worth noticing. A hiding place is somewhere you go. A shield is something you get behind. Both of them are locations, not procedures.

That is the difference between what you have and what you need. You have procedures for a hundred scenarios. This gives you one place, available now, before anything has happened.

You are not without shelter until the trigger arrives. Scripture says thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word, Psalm 119:114, and the hiding place is described as a present possession rather than as a contingency, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a location real to somebody who has only ever had plans.

Why the system has never been used

Here is the mechanism, and it is not a criticism of you.

When a hard thing actually arrives, the part of you that manages comes up first. That is trained, it is fast, and it is genuinely good; it is why people ring you. It gets the calls made, the arrangements sorted, the room held together.

And that part of you does not reach for verses. It reaches for the next action.

So the notebook is never opened, not because you forget, but because the moment it was designed for is exactly the moment your competence takes over. The system is designed to be used by a version of you that does not exist under pressure.

That is why nothing has ever been used, and it is why it will keep not being used, however many scenarios you add.

You are not going to be held by a plan. Scripture says be still, and know that I am God, Psalm 46:10, and stillness is named as the condition for knowing rather than as a thing to arrange, and the Holy Spirit is not asking a capable woman to become incapable, only to have somewhere to stand while she is being capable.

What the preparing is actually about

Let me say the thing under the system, because you have half seen it already. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 119:114, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

The index is not about Scripture. It is about being unable to be surprised.

Somewhere back there, something arrived that you had not prepared for, and it went badly, or you felt it go badly, and since then you have been building a life in which nothing can arrive without having been thought about first. It is written, in Psalm 119:114, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

That is a reasonable response to a bad experience and it has cost you almost nothing except this: you cannot rest. A person who must be ready for everything is never off duty, and the readiness has to be maintained, and maintaining it is what your evenings are for now.

And a verse held as insurance is not being trusted. It is being kept in reserve, which is the opposite posture from standing on something.

You are not required to anticipate everything. Scripture says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, Matthew 6:34, and it is a boundary drawn around one day by somebody entirely realistic about trouble, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked anybody to pre-arrange a response to every possible week.
