Forty Saved and None of Them in Me

There are forty of them in the folder. You know because you counted one evening, and the counting was not a good feeling.

Every one is true. You saved each one for a reason; some of them you can still remember the reason for, and some of them are just there, saved on a Tuesday eighteen months ago for a Tuesday you can no longer recall.

Some are screenshots of a page with a nice background. Two of them are the same verse in different fonts.

And this morning something went wrong before nine o'clock, and you stood in your own kitchen with the kettle going, and you could not bring one line of it to mind.

Not one. Not the substance of one. You knew there were verses about exactly this, and you knew they were in the folder, and that knowledge did nothing at all in your chest at ten past eight.

You could have opened the folder. You did, later, in the car, and scrolled it for a bit.

Here is what has happened, and it is not a failure of devotion. You have a collection. A collection is a thing you visit. It sits somewhere and you go to it, and it is complete without you, and it asks nothing.

What you need at ten past eight is not a collection. It is a possession, which is something else entirely, and you have not got one.

What this page will not do

I am not going to give you a system. There are good ones and this is not the place, and a system is another thing to keep up with, and you have enough of those. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Deuteronomy 31:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

I am not going to tell you the forty were a waste. They were not. Every one of them was a moment when something true caught your attention, and that is a good instinct and it is the reason you are reading this rather than something else.

And I am not going to give you a list. This whole site refuses that, and this category refuses it most of all. Handing you five verses to choose between would leave you exactly where you are, with one more folder. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Deuteronomy 31:8, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

So I am going to give you one, for this season, and then talk about what keeping it means, because that is the part nobody explains.

You are not failing at faith because nothing came to you this morning. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and nearness is not conditional on recall, and the Holy Spirit was in that kitchen at ten past eight whether or not one line surfaced.

Here it is

And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.Deuteronomy 31:8

That is yours. Stop looking.

It is worth saying why this one, because it answers something specific about your ten past eight.

Notice the first clause. He it is that doth go before thee. Not with you afterwards, when you have worked out what happened. Before. In the part of the day you have not reached yet. Scripture holds that ground in Deuteronomy 31:8, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

That is exactly the gap you were standing in this morning. Something had gone wrong at nine and there was a whole day ahead of it, and what you needed was not an explanation of the thing that had happened, it was somebody already standing in the hours that had not arrived. This rests on Scripture in Deuteronomy 31:8, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

And then the three that follow, all of them His: he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee. No conditions attached to any of them. Nothing about remembering the right verse at the right moment.

You are not walking into the rest of today unaccompanied. Scripture says he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, Deuteronomy 31:8, and the going before is His action and it happens whether or not it is remembered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that solid in a person standing at a kettle.

Why a collection cannot be stood on

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth seeing plainly, because you have been trying harder at a thing that does not respond to trying. Scripture already said it in Deuteronomy 31:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

Saving something makes it available. It does not make it yours. The two feel similar because both end with the item being in your possession in some sense, but they are not the same.

Available means you can get to it if you go and look. Yours means it turns up without being fetched.

Only one thing moves a sentence from the first to the second, and it is not sincerity and it is not how good the verse is. It is repetition in ordinary conditions. The same words, in the same place, over and over, on days when nothing is wrong.

That is why the folder has never worked at ten past eight. Every verse in it has been read once, at the moment of saving, with feeling, and never again. It has forty first readings and no second ones.

You are not lacking devotion. Scripture says thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee, Psalm 119:11, and hid is a storing word describing something put away deliberately and over time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written and settles it into a person's chest at the pace such things settle.

What keeping it actually looks like

It is much smaller than you think, and much duller.

You write it on a card. Not a screenshot; a card, in your own hand, because the hand remembers.

You put it where the day happens. Not in a Bible and not in a folder. Beside the kettle, on the windowsill above the sink, on the dashboard. Somewhere your eye lands on ordinary mornings when nothing is wrong.

And you read it then. On the good days. That is the part everybody skips, because on a good day it feels unnecessary, and it is precisely the good days that put it into you.

Then when the thing goes wrong at ten past eight, you do not go looking. It is already there.

Six weeks of that and you will have one. One is enough. One is a great deal more than forty in a folder, and it is the only thing this category has ever been for.

You are not required to hold a library. Scripture says man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, Matthew 4:4, and Jesus quoted one line into a wilderness rather than a passage, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a single sentence sufficient for a morning.
