You learned it kneeling next to somebody, in words you did not choose, in a room that smelled of a particular thing you have not smelled in twenty years.
Those are the words that are still in you. When something goes badly and it comes out of you without deciding, it comes out in that one.
But you have not lived in that language for two decades. You think in this one now. You dream in it, mostly, which surprised you when you noticed. Your children speak it and only it, and when you say something to them in the other one they answer you in this one, kindly, without noticing what they are doing.
So here is where you are, and it is a strange place to describe to anybody.
In the old language, prayer feels like a recitation. The words are there, whole and perfect, and they arrive complete, and they belong to a boy who knelt next to somebody, and you are not that boy and it is like reading somebody else's letter aloud.
In the new one, you cannot find the register. The vocabulary is all there, obviously, but there is no groove worn into it. Praying in it feels like writing with the wrong hand: everything comes out clumsy and slightly false, and you hear yourself and stop.
So you have stopped, mostly. Not from unbelief. From not having anywhere to do it from.
What this page will not do
I am not going to tell you which language to pray in. That is not a question anybody outside your own history can answer, and the people who have opinions about it usually have one language.
I am not going to tell you the old words were empty. They were not. A boy kneeling and saying words he did not choose is not doing nothing; a great many people meet God for the first time that way, and you were one of them. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.
And I am not going to tell you to go back to it, or to leave it behind. Both of those are somebody else's instruction imposed on a life they have not lived.
I am going to give you one verse, and it is not about language at all, which is exactly why it is the one.
You are not further from God for living between two of them. Scripture says the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the heart is not stored in a vocabulary, and the Holy Spirit is present in a courtyard with a man who has stopped praying because he cannot find the register.
Here it is
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26
That is yours. Take it and stop trying to find the right words.
Read what it actually says, because most people quote the second half and lose the argument in the first.
We know not what we should pray for as we ought. That is Paul, writing to a church, including himself. It is not a description of a particular weakness in a particular person. It is the standard condition of everybody who has ever prayed.
And then the answer, which is not that we learn to do it better. The Spirit itself maketh intercession for us.
Then the phrase that is exactly yours: with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Not groanings in Spanish. Not groanings in English. Groanings that cannot be uttered, which means they exist below language entirely, in a place where the question of which one you were raised in does not arise.
You are not disqualified by not having the words. Scripture says the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, Romans 8:26, and the intercession is described as unutterable rather than as spoken in any tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the speaking in exactly the place where yours has failed.
The gap is not a fault
Here is what has happened to you, and it is worth naming properly, because you have been treating it as a spiritual decline. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
A language of the heart is not chosen. It is laid down early, in a particular room, with a particular person, and it stays where it was put. That is why the old words come out when something goes badly: they are not stored where your vocabulary is stored.
But a life is lived forward. Twenty years of this country has built a whole self in the second language, and that self is not a lesser one and it is not a betrayal.
So you have two, and prayer has fallen into the seam between them. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Romans 8:26, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
That is not sin, it is not backsliding, and it is not something you did. It is what happens to a very large number of people who move, and almost nobody talks about it, which is why you have assumed it is only you.
You are not the only one standing in that seam. Scripture says God is no respecter of persons, Acts 10:34, and it was said the moment the gospel crossed into a second culture, and the Holy Spirit is not more available in one language than in another.
What to do with the two
Do not pick. That is the instruction, and it is the opposite of what you have been trying. Scripture stands under that in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
You have been attempting to choose one and be consistent, because consistency feels like integrity. It is not integrity here; it is a rule you invented, and it has cost you your prayer life. It is written, in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
Let both be in the room.
If the old words come, let them come, even if they arrive as recitation. A recitation prayed by a man who means it is not a performance; it is a man using the only groove that was ever worn in him.
If the new language comes, let it be clumsy. Clumsy is what a thing is before it is worn in, and the only way anything gets worn in is by being used badly for a while.
And when neither comes, which is most nights at the moment, that is the verse. That is what it is for. The Spirit is interceding underneath both of them, in something that was never words at all.
You are not required to be consistent in order to be heard. Scripture says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh, Matthew 12:34, and the direction of travel is from the heart outward rather than from the correct vocabulary inward, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a man to settle on one before He carries anything.
Nothing here gives you back the room you learned it in.
What changes tonight is that you stop auditioning your own prayers.
You have been listening to yourself as you pray, in both languages, assessing the output. That is why the old one sounds like recitation and the new one sounds false: you are standing outside them both, listening, and nobody can pray and be the audience at the same time. Scripture settles that in Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
So say the verse out loud, in whichever language arrives first, and do not correct it. If it comes out in the old one, leave it. If it comes out in this one, leave that.
Then say whatever comes after it, badly, in either, or in both in the same sentence, which is how a great many people in your position actually speak when nobody is listening.
And on the nights when nothing comes at all, remember what the verse says is happening underneath. It is not silence. It is an intercession going on in a register that has never needed a vocabulary.
You are not unheard in the gap between two languages. Scripture says likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, Romans 8:26, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying every unformed thing in you across a seam you have been standing in for twenty years.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in whichever language arrives. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and twenty years between two languages have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.
- Rule that this only counts in the language I learned it in, you were never in Scripture and you are not staying. The Word of God says the Spirit maketh intercession with groanings which cannot be uttered, and in the name of Jesus I stop auditioning my own prayers.
- Feeling that clumsy words are false, get out of this house. Scripture says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh, Matthew 12:34, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a man to be fluent before He would carry anything.
- Lord, the interceding You describe happens below every language there is, and it has been going on in me through twenty years of silence. I am saying it out loud in whichever one comes first, and I am not correcting it.
