The windows of the bus have gone white with everybody's breath, and she is standing, one hand on the yellow pole, the other holding her phone against her chest the way you hold something you are guarding. Wet coats. A shopping bag leaning on her shin. Somebody two rows back laughing at a screen.
In her ear a man is saying that faith is spelled R I S K, and that God meets you in the step, not in the planning. Forty seconds and she skips him. Now a woman is saying, gently, that most of us run ahead of God because we cannot bear to wait on Him. Skip. Somebody says let peace be the umpire, follow the peace. Skip. Somebody says feelings make a poor compass, sit down and count the cost like the Lord said. Skip. Four voices in six minutes, seven if you count the ones from last night, and here is the thing that has been quietly taking her apart: she respects every one of them. She has learned real things from every one of them. And not one of them has ever heard of her.
There is a decision waiting on her at work and it has a date on it. Nights, if she says yes. Out of the house at the hour her boys go to bed. Three weeks she has carried it around like this, and somewhere in the second week she stopped listening altogether. Her thumb does it by itself now. Play, forty seconds, skip. She is not looking for an answer any more. She is looking for the one that will make the others go quiet.
Then the bell, and the doors sigh open, and the cold comes up the aisle, and the shopping bag moves off her shin, and she looks up at the stop going past the white window and it is not hers. It is the one after. And you know exactly what that is like, because you have been riding past your own stop for weeks now with good people talking in your ears, and not one of them wrong, and you are no clearer than you were the day it started.
The voice that says your name
Let me say the thing you have not said out loud, because it has been sitting on your chest for a while and it is heavier than the decision is. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.
You have started to think there is something wrong with you. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
Everybody else seems to get a word. You get a library. You have more good teaching within reach of your thumb than any believer in the history of the world, and you are more tired than most of them, and somewhere in the last month you did the arithmetic and concluded that the missing piece must be you. Not enough stillness. Not enough of whatever it is that other people apparently have. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, John 10:3-4, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
It is not you. Hear me. It is not you.
Here is what has actually been happening, and it is smaller and far kinder than the story you have been telling yourself. You have been doing a job nobody gave you. Scripture stands under that in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
Somewhere in these three weeks you stopped being a person who needed help and quietly became a panel. Weighing one against another. Marking them. Deciding which of the people you love and learn from was right this time, so that you could finally be allowed to move. That is arbitration, and you were never appointed to it, and you were never built for it. It is not the searching that has worn you down. It is the judging. It is written, in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
Now look at what Jesus said about how a sheep actually finds its way, because there is no panel anywhere in it.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.John 10:3-4
They are not comparing. They are not scoring one voice against another. There is a voice they know and a name they answer to, and the knowing is not a verdict they reached at the end of a process. It happens in them before they have decided anything.
You do not know your friend's voice on the phone because you tested it against the other voices. You know it because it is hers. Recognition is not evaluation. It never was, and the reason you cannot think straight is that you have been trying to do the second one in order to earn the first. Scripture settles that in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
And hold this next part gently, because it takes the weight off everybody in this story, including the people in your ears. He calleth his own sheep by name. Not by category. Not by the general shape of a person in your situation. By name.
Which means the reason none of those seven answers settled it is not that any of them was wrong. They were speaking to a room, and every one of them was doing that honestly and well. You are not a room. You are a name, and a name is the one thing a message to a room cannot say. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
Two things have to sit down in you before you open your mouth, and I am not going to argue you into either one, because nobody was ever argued into hearing.
The first is that all of this is present tense. Jesus did not describe a shepherd who used to call. Read the verbs again: the porter opens, the sheep hear, He calls, He leads, He goes before. Not one of them has been retired. He is not a voice that spoke to people with better attention spans in a quieter century. He speaks now, on a Tuesday, on a bus with the windows gone white.
The second is that this is you. Not believers in general. You, with the date on the calendar and the four voices and the thumb that keeps moving. He knows your name. He has never once had to look it up.
So keep every hour of what you have learned. Nobody here is telling you to stop reading, and nobody is telling you that thinking is the enemy of faith, because He gave you the mind you are thinking with and He is not nervous about it. Go on asking the people who actually know you and know the work. What is coming off you today is not the learning. It is the ranking. The ranking was never your assignment, and it has never once produced clarity, because clarity is not a prize you win by listening harder. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
Here is the part that sounds like bad news for about four seconds.
The disagreement is not going to end.
Those voices will still differ next week and next year, because they are speaking into rooms full of people whose situations are not yours. You have been waiting for a consensus that was never coming, and calling the waiting carefulness. Scripture holds that ground in John 10:3-4, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
Now feel what that actually frees. If the arbitration was never yours, then nothing is pending. There is no verdict still to come in. The thing you thought you were still assembling was finished before you ever got on that bus, because He went out in front of you at the beginning of this and He has been out in front the whole three weeks. He is not the conclusion of your research. He is the One who started the searching by calling you. This rests on Scripture in John 10:3-4, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
So the noise is not the mountain. Read that again slowly. Noise has never decided anything in its life. The mountain is the sentence sitting underneath the noise, the one that says you are not permitted to move until everybody agrees. That is the thing standing in your way, and that is the thing that is about to hear your voice. Scripture already said it in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on your feet, with the phone quiet beside you. Not read, said. The standing to speak like this is yours already, not because you finally got the argument straight, but because you belong to the Shepherd who names His own, and He has never handed that naming over to a committee. And Jesus put a price on what it costs to move a mountain, and the price was a seed. Not a harvest. Not a settled mind, not the end of the disagreement, not one more voice. A seed. And He did not say think it at the mountain. He said say unto this mountain, remove hence. So say it, out loud, to the sentence that has been keeping your feet still. What He does with the date on your calendar is His, and however He answers, He answers as the One who went out in front of you first. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in John 10:3-4, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
- Disagreement, you may go on as long as you like, and you do not get a vote in what I do next. The Word of God says the Shepherd calls His own sheep by name and goes out ahead of them, and I am following the One who is already in front of me. In the name of Jesus, I hear the voice that knows me.
- Lord Jesus, You call Your own sheep by name, and You called mine before I ever went looking. I am Yours and I am known by You, so I am not the referee of this, I am a sheep of Your pasture. I thank You, because You have never once needed a room to agree before You spoke to one of Your own, and Scripture says it, in John 10:3, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a name across a crowd.
- God, Your peace keeps my heart and my mind right now because Scripture says You guard them in Christ Jesus. Confusion has worn the coat of carefulness long enough, and I call it by its right name. My Shepherd's voice decides me, not the many voices around me.
