The Appointment Is Already Booked

Twenty past two. You are on the landing with the door pulled to, and the screen is the brightest thing in the house.

She is asleep. You checked eleven minutes ago and you will check again in about ten. She is warm and she is breathing and the thing on her arm looks the same as it looked at ten o'clock, which is the only genuinely useful piece of information you have gathered all night, and you got it by looking at her rather than at this.

You have read about eight things. Two of them were reassuring and you moved past them quickly, because reassuring pages do not hold your attention at this hour and you have started to notice that about yourself.

Six were not reassuring. One of them had a list of things to watch for, and you have been checking her against that list, and she does not have any of them, and you have checked four times.

The appointment is at ten past nine. You made it at half past seven this evening. It is booked, it is confirmed, and it is in your phone.

So here is the honest position, and it is worth saying plainly at twenty past two.

There is nothing you can find in the next seven hours that you can act on before ten past nine. If something changes, you already know what to do, and you would not need an article to tell you to do it.

The searching is not preparation. It is what a frightened father does on a landing when the alternative is lying in the dark.

What this page will not do

I am not going to tell you what the rash is. I have not seen it, I am not qualified, and a page that offers a parent a diagnosis at two in the morning is doing something close to harm.

I am going to say the safety part clearly, because it matters more than the rest of this page. If she becomes floppy or unusually drowsy, if she is breathing fast or struggling, if she will not take fluids, if the rash does not fade when you press a glass to it, if she has a fever you cannot bring down, or if anything simply frightens you badly enough, ring the out-of-hours number or the emergency services tonight. Do not wait for nine. Trusting God has never once meant sitting on a bad feeling about a child.

Nothing on this page is an argument against acting. It is an argument against reading, which is a different activity and is not the same thing at all.

You are not being careless by stopping. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and the nearness is not conditional on the reading continuing, and the Holy Spirit is on that landing with a father at twenty past two.

The verse is about who is on duty

There is a line in Psalm 4 that reads differently when you are the one awake. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 4:8, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8

Look at the last word first. Safety. And then look at who is credited with it.

Thou, Lord, only. Not the psalmist's vigilance. Not his precautions, which he had, because he was not a man without enemies and he took sensible steps. The keeping is attributed to somebody else, exclusively.

That is a strange thing to say and it is the whole reason the verse is worth having on a landing.

He is not saying nothing can happen. He is saying that whatever keeping is being done tonight is not being done by him, and that this is why he is able to lie down.

Now put that against your last four hours. You have been on duty. Standing on a landing, checking a list, watching a screen, and underneath it a belief that has never been examined: that your attention is part of what is protecting her. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 4:8, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

It is not. It never has been. That is not a failure of yours; it is a fact about what attention can do, and it means the night is being spent on something that has no mechanism.

You are not the thing keeping your daughter safe tonight. Scripture says thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety, Psalm 4:8, and the only is the load-bearing word in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is present in a child's room whether her father is awake in the doorway or asleep down the hall.

What the night is costing

Let me be practical about it, because it is not abstract.

At ten past nine you are going to sit in a room with somebody who has training you do not have. They are going to ask you questions, and the quality of your answers is going to shape what they think.

When did it start. Has it spread. Was there a fever. Has she been eating. Did anything change in the house this week.

You know all of that. You know it better than anybody. And a man who has had two hours of sleep, half of them on a landing, gives worse answers to those questions than a man who has had six, because tiredness eats exactly the kind of recall that appointment runs on.

The single most useful thing you can do for your daughter between now and ten past nine is sleep.

That is not a spiritual argument. It is the practical one, and it happens to point the same way.

You are not helping her by staying awake. Scripture says except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain, Psalm 127:1, and the watchman in that verse is doing real work and doing it uselessly, and the Holy Spirit is not asking a father to hold a night He is already holding.

The two kinds of checking

There is a difference between the checking that helps and the checking that does not, and at two in the morning they feel identical.

Looking at her helps. Putting a hand on her, seeing that she is warm and breathing and that the thing on her arm has not changed, is real information, gathered from the actual child, and it is the reason you know she is all right at this moment.

Reading does not help. It gathers information about other people's children from strangers, and none of it is about her, and the six frightening pages have not told you one thing about the girl asleep in that room.

You already know this. You said it to yourself an hour ago and then went back to it anyway, because the frightening pages have a pull that reassuring ones do not.

So the instruction is not to stop caring. It is to keep the checking that touches your actual daughter and end the one that does not.

You are not neglecting her by putting the phone down. Scripture says casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you, 1 Peter 5:7, and casting is a throwing word rather than a monitoring word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a night off a man who cannot put it down himself.
