The Noise It Made on the Hill

It did it twice on the way up and once coming back down, and it was not there last week.

You have described it to a search box four different ways. A knocking. A knocking under load. A knocking that goes when you lift off. A knocking that goes when you lift off, at low revs, on an incline, on a vehicle of that age with that mileage.

You have watched two videos of somebody else's engine making a noise that is possibly the same noise and possibly not, because a phone microphone is not a stethoscope and you know that and you watched them anyway.

You have arrived at a list of about five things it could be. Two of them are nothing. One is a day's labor. One is a great deal more than that.

It is twenty past midnight and you are still going.

And here is the thing you have known since about half past ten, which has not stopped you.

You cannot diagnose an engine through a screen. You never could. The man at the garage will put it on the ramp on Tuesday and tell you in about ten minutes what four hours of this has not.

So what have you been doing for four hours?

You have not been searching a noise. You have been searching a number. Every one of those five possibilities has a price attached to it, and what you have really been trying to find out, since half past ten, is whether this is the week that breaks.

What this page will not do

I am not going to tell you what the noise is. I have not heard it, I am not a mechanic, and a page that guesses at somebody's engine is guessing at their money.

I am going to say the practical part. Ring the garage in the morning and describe it exactly as you have described it here: twice going up, once coming down, under load, goes when you lift off, not there last week. That is a genuinely useful description and it is more than most people give them. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Psalm 3:5, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

Ask for a look and a price before any work. Ask what it would be if it is the small thing and what it would be if it is the large one. Most garages will tell you, and knowing both numbers is worth more than another four hours.

And do not drive it hard until somebody has looked, because a noise under load is worth taking seriously, and that is the one piece of mechanical advice on this page.

You are not in this because you did something careless. Scripture says I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound, Philippians 4:12, and Paul writes it from inside the lean half, and the Holy Spirit is in a yard at midnight with a man doing arithmetic he has not admitted to doing.

The verse is a man who slept in the middle of it

There is a line in Psalm 3 that is easy to read past because it is so ordinary.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.Psalm 3:5

Look at what is happening around it. That psalm was written by a man whose own son had turned on him, who had left his city on foot, and who says in the second verse that people were saying there was no help for him in God.

That is the situation. And the thing he records, as though it were remarkable, is that he went to bed and slept and woke up.

It was remarkable. Anybody who has been in a genuine hole knows that sleeping through it is not automatic and is not a small thing.

And notice the reason he gives. Not that the situation improved overnight. Not that he had worked out a plan. For the Lord sustained me. The sleeping is attributed to somebody holding him up, not to the trouble having eased.

You are not going to be sustained by working it out first. Scripture says I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me, Psalm 3:5, and the sustaining is given as the cause of the sleep rather than as its reward, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man up through a night in which nothing has been solved.

What you have really been asking

Say it out loud in the yard, because it will shrink slightly.

Is this the week that breaks.

That is the question. Not what the knocking is. And it is a real question, because you know what is in the account and you know what is due at the end of the month, and there is a version of the five possibilities that does not fit.

But notice that the search cannot answer that one either. Even if you correctly identified the fault tonight, you would not know what the garage charges, whether they have the part, whether it can wait, or whether they will let you pay it across two months, which a good many of them will if you ask on the Tuesday rather than after the work.

So the four hours have been spent on a question the internet was never going to touch, dressed as one it might have.

You are not required to know tonight whether this is survivable. Scripture says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, Matthew 6:34, and the boundary is drawn around one day by somebody entirely realistic about trouble, and the Holy Spirit is not asking a man to price a fortnight he has not reached.

Why it is worse at midnight

There is a reason the five possibilities have been sorting themselves in one direction all evening.

At midnight the small ones stop being credible. That is not information; it is the hour. The same list read on a Tuesday morning with the kettle on has a completely different center of gravity, and it will, and you will notice it.

Everybody's arithmetic gets worse late. Nobody has ever solved a money problem after eleven at night, and a great many people have made one feel considerably larger.

So whatever conclusion you reach in the next hour, it is not a conclusion. It is a mood with numbers in it, and it should not be allowed to set the terms of the morning.

You are not seeing this at its true size right now. Scripture says weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning, Psalm 30:5, and it is an observation about how differently the same facts sit at two different hours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man through the hour when everything is at its largest.
