Six People Gave Me a Verse

They came within about eleven days of each other and every one of them was meant.

Your aunt sent the one about all things working together. A woman from work, who does not usually mention anything, sent one about being close to the broken-hearted, and you could tell it had cost her something to send it. Somebody put a card through the door with a reference on it and nothing else. Two came in the same evening from two different people who do not know each other, which felt like it ought to mean something and did not.

There is a sixth. You cannot remember who sent the sixth.

They are all true. That is the thing you would want understood if you ever said any of this out loud, which you will not, because there is no way to say people have been kind to me and it has made things worse without sounding like somebody you do not want to be.

And here is what has happened in you. Every one of those verses now arrives with a person attached: their face, their tone, the fact that a reply is expected, the small pressure of being seen to receive it well.

So none of them can be heard. They are not a chorus, they are a crowd, and a crowd is not something a person can lean on.

You are not ungrateful. You are in a room with six voices in it, and what you need is one.

What this page will not do

I am not going to say anything against the six. Every one of them did a good thing, and if the roles were reversed you would have sent something too, and probably one of the same ones.

I am not going to tell you to be more grateful. You are grateful. That is not the problem and framing it as one would be one more voice in the room. It is written, in 1 Kings 19:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

I am not going to send you back to any of theirs, either, because at the moment they all carry a person, and that is exactly what has made them unhearable.

I am going to make the room quiet, and then hand you one that has nobody attached.

You are not failing to receive comfort. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and the nearness is not routed through anybody's message, and the Holy Spirit is in that room whether or not one word has landed since it happened.

Here it is

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:12

That is yours. Nobody sent it to you. It is not a reply to anybody.

Look at what is in it and why it fits your particular week.

Elijah is on a mountain, and three enormous things go past him. A wind that tears the mountain. An earthquake. A fire. Every one of them is the sort of thing a person would expect God to be in, and the text says, flatly, three times, that He was not.

Then something small and quiet, and that is where He was.

Now hold that against eleven days of good verses arriving. Six large, sincere, well-meant things have gone past you, and you have been standing there waiting to feel God in one of them, and concluding, when you did not, that something in you has gone wrong. Scripture settles that in 1 Kings 19:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

Nothing has gone wrong. This is a passage about the difference between the loud thing and the place He actually is, and it was preserved for people in exactly your position.

You are not deaf, and He was not obliged to be in the loud thing. Scripture says after the fire a still small voice, 1 Kings 19:12, and the smallness is the point of the passage rather than an accident of translation, and the Holy Spirit is not competing for volume with six kind people.

Why they cannot be heard

Here is the mechanism, and it will free you from thinking badly of yourself.

A verse from a person is never only a verse. It is a verse plus a relationship. When your aunt sends one, what arrives is the sentence and also your aunt: her assumptions about what you need, her own fear, the reply she is waiting for, the years of history between you.

That is not a criticism of your aunt. It is simply what human communication is.

When one arrives, you can usually receive the sentence and set the rest aside. When six arrive in eleven days, the rest becomes a weight of its own, and the weight sits on top of the sentences, and now every verse in your possession has a social obligation attached to it.

So the problem is not the verses and it is not your heart. It is that a whole category of Scripture has been temporarily welded to a set of relationships you are currently too tired to carry. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in 1 Kings 19:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

That is repairable, and it is repaired by receiving one from nobody.

You are not required to manage anybody while you are being comforted. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee, Psalm 55:22, and it is a burden going in one direction rather than an exchange to be maintained, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a person something with no reply expected.

What quiet is actually for

You have not had a quiet hour since it happened. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in 1 Kings 19:12, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

Notice that. There has been noise the whole time: the arrangements, the people, the phone, the six. Even the kind noise is noise, and you have been living inside it for eleven days, and every attempt to hear something has been made over the top of it. Scripture holds that ground in 1 Kings 19:12, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

Elijah did not hear the small voice while the fire was going past. He heard it after.

That is not mystical. It is how hearing works. Quiet is not a spiritual achievement; it is a condition, and it is one you have not had access to. This rests on Scripture in 1 Kings 19:12, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

So the practical instruction of this whole page is smaller than you would expect. Put the phone somewhere else for an hour. Not off, if somebody might need you. Somewhere else, so that the six are not in the room.

Then read the verse above once, slowly, out loud.

You are not obliged to hear God over the top of everything. Scripture says be still, and know that I am God, Psalm 46:10, and the stillness is named as the condition rather than as the reward, and the Holy Spirit is not asking anybody to listen through a crowd.
